Summer 2003
The Tiger, the Brahman, and the Jackal
by T. James Belich
Directed by Jaron Burdick
June 12 – 14, 2003
Based on a folk tale from India, this story tells of a poor Brahman who learns
that, truly, no good deed goes unpunished. In an act of mercy he frees
a Tiger from a cage only to become destined for the starving beast's next
dinner. The Brahman's pleas for his life only secure a promise from the
Tiger to abide by the decision of an outside judge. In vain the Brahman
searches for someone sympathetic to his cause, but he is rebuffed as a self-serving
fool first by the Buffalo, then by the Sacred Fig Tree, and lastly by the
Road. When a foolish Jackal offers to help, the desperate Brahman soon
finds himself at wit's end explaining the situation to the dim-witted beast, his only
hope of escaping the jaws of the impatient Tiger!

Smack in the Middle
Written and Directed by Jaron Burdick
June 27, 2003
Loosely based on one of Aesop’s fables, Smack in the Middle is the story of a great dispute between the birds and the beasts, with the bats caught in the middle. When a severe drought threatens to destroy the land, the King of Beasts and the Queen of Birds draw up a treaty by which to ration the remaining water. But the local mosquitoes frustrate their plans, turning the monarchs on each other and on the mosquitoes' arch-enemies, the bats. War breaks out and throws the whole country into chaos until the royal children of the birds, beasts, and bats are able to unravel the mosquitoes' deceit and save their people from destruction.
